This has become a family tradition at Christmas. I don't see any reason you can't make it any time of year though. Use caution, as the syrup gets extremely hot in the microwave.

Preparation Time: 1 hour, plus 24 hours drying time    Serving Size: 12

  • 4 large navel oranges
  • 4 1/2 cups water, total
  • 2 cups sugar (for syrup)
  • 1 cup sugar (for rolling candy)

Cut orange peels into 1/2 inch strips. Cook strips in 2 cups water in glass bowl in microwave for 8 minutes. Carefully drain water and cook strips again in 2 more cups of fresh water for 8 more minutes. Stir, cover and cook 30 more minutes until soft. Carefully remove bowl from microwave and sit on heat resistant surface. Make syrup. Add 2 cups sugar to 1/2 cup water in glass bowl. Microwave 2 minutes to dissolve sugar. Carefully drain peel and mix with syrup. Microwave 15 minutes, making sure to stir every 5 minutes. Drain peel. Roll hot peel in 1 cup sugar until coated. Dry for 24 hours.
